Your Homebrew Game Odyssey Begins Now

Ever wonder what goes on behind closed doors at the modern indie (homebrew) development and publishing companies? To be honest, generally not much, we suspect,  as a lot of those companies are just 1 or 2 person teams cranking products out of their basement. That being said, we did have the chance to visit one of the only modern indie homebrew companies that on a scale that is much more than a glorified hobbyist project, and we brought back "Zelda 4".

Zelda 4 is an original game. As can be seen from the writing inside the pink box on the game's cardboard box, Zelda 4 is not a retail item. It is not endored or authorized by the original makers of the franchise, etc etc. This game is a fun little homebrew game that was given out to guests at the annual Christmas party of a retro indie homebrew game company.

Attendees of the 2024 office Christmas party got to enjoy a full Christmas dinner (ham, mashed potatoes, bean salad, pumpkin pie tarts, pastries, etc.) as well as a live music performance. Several gaming stations were also set up where guests and company staff could try out some of the latest and greatest indie games, and of course alcoholic drinks were flowing as to be expected. At the end of the night, guests all received a special commemorative gift, i.e. Zelda 4, as a thanks for their contributions over the past year, and the party concluded.

Zelda 4 may look like the original Legend of Zelda game at first glance, but it is an entirely different game! The game plays somewhat like Pac-Man, though it is set in Link's world. Included in the package is a mini-poster, box, instruction manual, and game cassette. A green LED lights up when the Famicom game machine starts up.

Only 20 of these Zelda 4 games were made. The majority were given out to guests attending the office Christmas party of the retro game company, but to ensure that all guests had a copy of the game, a couple more pieces were made to account for any extra guests, hence this extra copy.

This homebrew game was never officially available for sale anywhere, nor will it ever be officially released. This is truly a grail for homebrew game collectors.

This cartridge is tested and works fine, as can be seen from the screenshots.
